Whether you call it an EKG or an ECG, an electrocardiogram is an important and painless tool for detecting heart disease and irregular heart beats that can lead to a variety of symptoms. Each beat of your heart is triggered by an electrical impulse from special cells in the upper right chamber of your heart. This electrical impulse travels to other parts of your heart and causes the heart to squeeze. An EKG records these electrical impulses.

An EKG can detect irregular heart rhythms, structural abnormalities, and problems with blood supply and the supply of oxygen to the heart muscle.
