Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a group of medical conditions that affect your body’s ability to process blood sugar (glucose). Diabetes is diagnosed when your body stops producing or can’t produce enough insulin, a hormone that helps shuttle glucose into your cells. As a result of insufficient insulin, you have chronically elevated blood sugar levels, which negatively affects your overall health.

The good news is that with proper medical management and lifestyle adjustments, you can manage diabetes and live a healthy life.

What are the types of diabetes?

Diabetes is not just one disease. At Allcare Internal Medicine, you may receive management for several types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

This autoimmune condition occurs when your immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, you don’t produce insulin and need to take daily insulin injections to manage your blood glucose levels. This type usually develops in children or young adults.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or your body can’t appropriately use the insulin you do produce. Usually, Type 2 diabetes develops after age 40 in people who are overweight or have a family history of the disease. Younger people who follow a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle may also develop the condition

Prediabetes

Prediabetes indicates that you have high blood sugar levels that may develop into full-blown Type 2 diabetes if you don’t take steps to get it under control. Your blood sugar levels aren’t quite high enough for a full diagnosis of diabetes, however.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

You may not always notice the symptoms of diabetes, especially in the case of Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.

Symptoms that may develop include:

  • Uncontrollable hunger and thirst
  • Irritability
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Tingling in the hands and feet

Sometimes the only way to detect the high blood sugar that indicates diabetes is through a blood test.

Why is it important to get care for diabetes?

When diabetes goes unmanaged, it can wreak havoc on your health. Complications of uncontrolled diabetes include:

  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Kidney failure
  • Eye problems
  • Poor circulation
  • Oral health issues

Diabetes also puts you at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and depression.

How is diabetes managed?

At Allcare Internal Medicine, you receive regular monitoring to help you stay on top of your blood sugar levels and any symptoms you have. The team also helps you create an eating and exercise plan to support healthier blood sugar levels. If you’re overweight, she helps you lose weight, which also helps with diabetes management.

Some people with diabetes require daily insulin injections or oral medications to help the body use insulin more effectively. These medications are used in conjunction with regular monitoring and lifestyle changes to manage your condition.
